The current Guinness world record of 4,513 patches was set byJuan Carlos Sanchez Cachero, a firefighter in Madrid, Spain, in 1992.
Guinness World Records also recognized the Largest collection of dragons: Charlene Leatherman of Texas, USA has a collection of 793 dragon items.
Mayor Sharon Konopa, Police Chief Ed Boyd and professional speaker Howard Baker Jr. acted as judges and spent about two hours counting the patches and recorded the official count of 8,158.
"There's so much history here," he said, nodding at the 68 tables covered with his collection.
Brooks has at least one patch from a fire service agency in every state and the District of Columbia. With some 25,000 fire agencies nationwide, he figures he'll be collecting for another decade at least.
All the badges eventually will be displayed by the Oregon Fire Service Museum when it has a permanent home.
The dollar value of the collection might be as much as $30,000, but Brooks said he's more interested in its place in history.
"It pays a tribute to the fire service that baseball cards won't do, that basketball cards won't do," Brooks said of his collection. "I could show you a favorite rookie card of a michael jordon, but they are a dime a dozen. These aren't."
