The Guinness world record for the Most expensive football shirt sold at auction was set by the No. 10 shirt worn by Pele in the 1970 World Cup final which was sold at Christie's, London, UK on 27 March 2002 for £157,750 ($225,109), over three times the expected price.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most people folding T-shirts simultaneously; it was 275 - set at Westfield Shopping Centre in an event organised by Retail Trust as part of the annual fundraiser during Retail Trust Week in London, UK.

Indian millionaire Datta Phuge, a 32-year-old moneylender from the Pimpri-Chinchwad city of Pune for whom gold is the ultimate passion, commissioned the world's most expensive shirt which is regarded to be an embellishment to his reputation as the 'Gold Man of Pimpri'.

Notably, 15 goldsmiths labored over 15 days at the rate of 18-hours a day to create this opulent shirt with an armor-like appearance.

Highly elated to wear his shiny dream shirt, Mr. Datta Phuge who inherited a fair amount of gold and wants to leave behind a sufficient amount for the next-generation, spent a whopping $235,000 on this custom-made shirt as an investment which will keep appreciating.

Crafted out of 3.5kg of 22-carat solid gold, this bling shirt created by Pune-based Ranka Jewelers boasts of 14,000 gold flowerings that have been interwoven with 100,000 spangles sewn into a base of finest white velvet, along with 6 Swarovski Crystal buttons.

Datta Phuge's nickname is "the gold man", and it's easy to see why.

"Some people ask me why I'm wearing so much gold but it was my dream. People have different aspirations. Some elite people want to own an Audi or Mercedes, and have big cars. I chose gold," he explains.
He has cars too, of course - five of them.

Interestingly, Phugge who owns 22 pounds of gold in the form of 10 chains, 6 bracelets and 25 rings, is not worried for any potential thieves or muggers, as he has his own personal security in place and moves around with body guards.

"The challenge was to make this as comfortable as wearing a normal shirt," says Tejpal Rankar, of Rankar Jewellers, a 133-year-old business in Pune, a few hours' drive from Mumbai.

Besides, being a well-known landowner, Phuge also runs a co-operative credit society and financial institutions.
