According to Guinness World Records, the previous world record for the largest group of carol singers was 7,514 at Bob Jones University, South Carolina, USA.
Pageant director Brian Gilbertson said it was a "big coup" to have the children's story book Possum Magic brought to life in 3-D.
"Once again, the credit unions are very proud of their commitment to the Credit Union Christmas Pageant, an event that is free, brings people together and literally the city to a standstill to be entertained, enthralled and taken to a magical place," said Chair of the Credit Union Pageant Company, Peter Evers.
This tradition of holding a Christmas Pageant in Adelaide was started in 1933, by Sir Edward Hayward, who owned John Martins Department store. David Jones bought over John Martins, and sold the rights of the pageant to the South Australian Government.
The Credit Union Christmas Pageant is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission on behalf of the South Australian Government and sponsored by five leading credit unions in South Australia - Savings & Loans, Australian Central, Community CPS Australia, Credit Union SA and Police Credit Union.
The Guinness world record for the Largest gathering of Santa Clauses was set by 12,965 people dressed up as Santa or Santa's helper in Derry City, Northern Ireland.
