Most goals scored in official matches during a year: Leo Messi breaks world record
MALLORCA, Spain --
After
scoring for the 75th and 76th time in 2012 to move within nine of Gerd Mueller's all-time record as Barcelona won 4-2 at Mallorca in the Spanish league on Sunday,
Lionel Messi, the Argentine phenomenon from Barcelona FC surpassed Pele's milestone of goals in a calendar year, setting the new world record for the Most goals scored in official matches during a year,

The Guinness world record for the Most goals scored by a goalkeeper was set by São Paulo FC's goalkeeper Rogério Ceni (both Brazil), who netted his 100th career goal on 27 March 2011. The record-breaking strike was a long-range free kick that earned his side a 2–1 win over their fiercest rivals, Corinthians.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most goals scored by an individual in a football European club competition (single season): 17, by Radamel Falcao (Colombia) playing for F.C. Porto in the 2011 UEFA Europa League. Porto won the title, its second all-time in the competition.
'O Rei' Pelé set his 75 goal record in 1958 with Santos and the Brazilian national team, taking 53 matches to do so. Messi, with Barça and Argentina, has done it in 59.
"Leo's records are spectacular," Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova said.
"It's spectacular when you think that he scores so many goals. Some few players reach these numbers in seven or eight seasons, he does it in one. And most of his goals are great goals."
This is the latest scoring feat for the Argentine forward. He scored 73 goals in the 2011-12 season for Barcelona, breaking the European club record of 67 goals set by Mueller in 1972-73.
He also set a Spanish league record of 50 goals last season and broke Cesar Rodriguez's 57-year milestone of 232 goals to become Barcelona's career scoring leader.
Messi, who received the second Golden Boot of his career as top European goalscorer for the 2011-2012 season, every day strengthens his position as favourite to again win the Ballon d'Or for the fourth time consecutively, which will be awarded by FIFA at the beginning of January in Zurich.
If confirmed, he will be the first player in history to receive the award four times – a prize presented to the footballer considered to be the best in the world each year.
