Largest coat: Stockport children sets world record

STOCKPORT, UK -- Children and parishioners in Stockport have broken the world record for the largest coat, after a community knitting project; the coat is made up of nearly 8,000 knitted panels and measures 42ft 6in (13m) by 18ft 2in (5.5m) - setting the new world record for the Largest coat.

The previous (unofficial) world record was held by a coat made in the Ukraine.

The Guinness world record for the fastest time to break 10 plastic coat hangers is 5.81 seconds and was achieved by Bipin Larkin (USA).

Guinness World Records also recognized the largest t-shirt; it measured 72.2 m (236.88 ft) in length and 48.7 m (159.78 ft) in width.

The coat was made as part of a project for the annual festival at St George's Church and primary school.

The youngsters have been taught how to knit by members of the church after a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, based on the biblical story of Joseph and his "coat of many colours".

Chris Dawson, from St George's Church festival committee, said: "We originally planned to have 3,000 squares. It just kept growing and growing."

The coat was hung up in the church and it will eventually be taken apart and given to charity for blankets.
