Longest string of bottle caps: Seaview School students sets world record

LINWOOD, NJ, USA -- Students and teachers at the Seaview School have collected 10,714 bottle caps and used them to create a chain of bottle caps - setting the new world record for the Longest string of bottle caps.

The previous Guinness world record for longest string of bottle caps was 2,000.

Guinness World Records also recognized the largest bottle cap mosaic, made of 3,614,468 bottle caps, created by students at the Freiherr vom Stein School (all Germany) in Hessisch Lichtenau, Germany.

The school-wide project was part of the school's "Peace and Friendship Day," which Principal Susan Speirs said was the culmination of a year-long character education program for students.

"They learn about how to reach peaceful solutions to conflict, within their class, their school and their daily lives," Speirs said of the educational value of the project. "You can never have too many friends."

It's something the art teacher says goes beyond a record, as it teaches the students the importance of reusing and recycling.

"I try very hard to reuse things all the time and i think it's good for them that they understand to reuse and give new purpose and to do something like this is great. It's a good message," said Kim Petrella, Art Teacher.

"I think that it is really cool that we were able to try to break the record, because it will be cool to look in the world record books and to think that we actually broke one," said fourth grader Valerie Speirs, 10 for the Press Of Atlantic City.
"But I just think it was a great experience because everyone cooperated and collected all of those bottle caps. It showed that if we work together, we can do anything."
