The previous Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people with Mohican/Mohawk hairstyles was achieved by West Cheshire College (UK) by 109 students and staff in Ellesmere Port, West Cheshire, UK.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most consecutive haircuts by a team in 8 hours: 294, achieved by the Cre8 Salon (USA) in Cape Coral, Florida, USA.
While the Mohawk hairstyle takes its name from the people of the Mohawk nation, an indigenous people of North America who originally inhabited the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York, the association comes from the 1939 Hollywood movie Drums Along the Mohawk starring Henry Fonda.
"I am constantly amazed by how generous people are when it comes to Today FM's Shave or Dye" said Ray D'Arcy, "with their stories, their hair and their money. It's a real privilege to be involved in Shave or Dye."
Ray was also joined by Bressie, Miriam O'Callaghan, Roz Purcell and Lizzy & Elmo from Love Hate who did some of the shaving or participants.
This is the fourth year of the Shave or Dye campaign for the Irish Cancer Society, which to date has raised over €4.5 million euro.
