Fastest rocket-powered model car: British students sets world record
WALSALL, UK -- Students at the Joseph Leckie Community Technology College in Walsall who have studied BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car in great detail before designing and developing a scale model rocket car (part of BLOODHOUND Education Programme), managed to hit 88.89 mph - setting the new world record for the Fastest rocket-powered model car.

The Guinness world record for the fastest speed achieved by a rocket-powered model car is 143.1 kmh (88.92 mph). The model car was designed and built by Trevor Howard, Nick Radburn, Dave Bakewell and students of Joseph Leckie Community Technology College (all UK) in Walsall, UK.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Fastest battery powered remote-controlled model car (RC):260.32 km/h (161.76 mph), set by the 1:10 scale car, called Schumacher Mi-3 at Rockingham Dragway, Rockingham, North Carolina, USA.
The Year 9 students responsible for the car had spent two terms developing it.
The 13 and 14 year olds students of Joseph Leckie Community Technology College in Walsall who have studied BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car in great detail before designing and developing a scale model rocket car (part of BLOODHOUND Education Programme), managed to hit 88.89 mph. That's scale speed of 259 mph.
The 53 cm balsawood model was fitted with D-Class Estes rocket motors and fired 100 metres along a high tensile wire, passing through timing gates.
Bloodhound was established to encourage young people to study STEM subjects.
"This project has captured the imagination of staff and students, not only in the technology faculty, but in the college as a whole," says head teacher Keith Whittlestone.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for students to be engaged in practical projects which enable them to better understand complex scientific engineering and mathematical principles at first hand, therefore increasing the relevancy of the curriculum, improving interest and motivation."
This world record could also provoke other schools to engage into the programme and try and build a faster one.
