The Guinness world record for the longest distance wave surfed on open water was 43.1 mi (66.47 km) by Gary Saavedra (Panama) surfing on the Panama Canal in Panama City, Panama.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Most surfboards stacked on a car, set by a group of surfers (USA) who successfully stacked a total of 282 surfboards on top of a car and drove 30.4 m (100 ft ) near Santa Barbara, California, USA.

Organiser Wes Smith from Go Ride a Wave surfing school said the previous world record of 110 was set in South Africa three years ago.

"The rules were simple: All surfers had to ride the same wave in at the same time and stand for at least five seconds while doing so."

There was a time limit of one hour from when the first attempt began for a new world record to be set.

The world record attempt required an army of workers, wave spotters, on-water group leaders, camera crews and official scrutineers, The Geelong Advertiser reported.

Mr Smith said the event attracted more than 200 board riders.
"The trick was to get them all to do the same thing at the same time," he said.
"It was an operation of military-like precision and we finally got there."

On the eighth attempt, everyone cheered. The world record for the largest number of surfers riding a single wave had been beaten, when time was almost over.
