GURGAON, Haryana, India--Dr. Ashok Rajgopal, Chairman Medanta Bone & Joint Institute, performed 30 Total knee replacement surgeries in less than 12 hours - setting the new world record for the Most knee replacement surgeries in less than 12 hours, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

The Guinness world record for the most breast augmentations surgeries performed in a lifetime (male) is 3,460 achieved by Dr. Ted Eisenberg (USA) at the Nazareth Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, from 1998 to 13 November 2009.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most consecutive knee spins: 30, achieved by Takashi Taniai (Japan) at Komaba High School, Nippon Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan.

"This achievement is a big relief, satisfaction and Joy. All patients were able to go back home home in their scheduled time. It could be possible because of the co-ordinated effort between the doctors, nurses and the paramedic staff," he said.

The patients were 39 to 82 years of age.

The previous world record for the Most knee replacement surgeries in 12 hours was created by Dr. Rajgopal on 24th March 2009, wherein he performed 24 Total knee replacement surgeries in less than 12 hours; which exists in the Limca Book of World Records.

Dr. Ashok Rajgopal was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in India to perform a bilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery in 1987.

"Typically, a bilateral (both knees) surgery takes close to 32 minutes. On the day we achieved the feat, our advantage was that we had three operation theatres at our disposal instead of the usual two. This saved us the time it usually takes to prepare and shift patients.

"The team prepares the patient and we, as surgeons, carry out the main part, the replacement. The cleaning and dressing afterwards are done by the team," said Dr Rajgopal.

The surgeon, however, cautioned that one cannot compromise on the standard and safety to carry out each surgery efficiently. "Moreover, the team is well rehearsed and it is a re-run of previous surgeries done by the members."

Rajgopal has perfomed surgeries on Indian football player Baichung Bhutia and weightlifting champion Karnam Malleswari.

A person could require knee replacement under various circumstances ranging from osteoarthritis to rheumatoid arthritis to an injury caused by trauma, among others.

According to the doctor, though the condition is more often found among elderly patients who have a loss of smooth movement in the knee joints due to hardening of the cartilage, the youngest patient operated upon by the doctor has been a 17-year-old while the oldest has been a 96-year-old.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, CMD Medanta: "The Medicity has been a very strong contribution in achieving this record; because of his vision , the team got a conducive platform & environment to achieve this world record.

"Medanta bone & Joint Institute now aims in future to create more records like these, thriving to be listed as one of the best Institutes in the world for providing world class healthcare at an affordable cost."
