Most heart transplant recipients: Duke Medicine breaks Guinness World Records' record (VIDEO)
DURHAM, N.C., USA -- Duke Medicine have broken a Guinness World Records' record by hosting the largest gathering of heart transplant recipients ever; a record-setting 189 heart transplant recipients
along with families, doctors and hospital staff gathered at the Washington Duke Inn for food and discussion, setting the new world record for the Most heart transplant recipients,

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest gathering of heart transplant recipients is 132 and was achieved by Donate Life Coalition of Michigan (USA) at the Art Moran Buick GMC, Southfield, Michigan, USA, on 14 February 2014.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most people making heart-shaped hand gestures; it is 554 and was achieved at an event organised by Fixers in honour of Stephen Sutton at Chase Terrace Technology College, Burntwood, UK on 4 May 2014.
The event—held to celebrate the more than 1,000 heart transplants conducted at Duke Medicine since the program began in 1985—was planned after the 1,000th transplant earlier this year, The Chronicle reported.
Nearly 200 transplant recipients, along with families, doctors and hospital staff gathered at the Washington Duke Inn for food and discussion.
Duke started performing heart transplants in 1985. Now, 60 to 65 heart transplants are performed each year. The high transplant volume is just one reason why Duke is ranked among the nation's top five heart programs by U.S. News & World Report this year.

Many of the recipients who gathered to help Duke celebrate have returned to normal lives after their transplant. At least one has become a competitive athlete. All who attended expressed their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff who make every heart transplant success possible.
