Most kidney stones produced and passed - world record set by Don Winfield

CALEDONIA, Ontario, Canada -- Don Winfield, 60, had produced and passed 6,504 kidney stones, ranging in size from a grain of sand to a dried pea, and lived in constant pain due to his condition - setting the (undesirable) world record for the most kidney stones produced and passed.

Eventually, the kidney had to be removed. "At its worst," says Don, "I produced 22 stones in 24 hours... and 35 over a period of five days."

Don Winfield, 60, has passed more than 6,500 kidney stones since Feb. 20, 1986 when he felt the pain of the first stone.

His life, he said, is ruled by trying to control the daily pain of passing the stones using a pump that injects morphine into his body.

He has had kidney surgery, changed his diet, been looked at by specialists here and the U.S. to no avail. He said he has been told it's something in his metabolism that causes his body to create more kidney stones than normal.

The most stones he passed in one day was 22. Some days he passes a few stones, some just one, while the most glorious days are those when he doesn't pass any. "On those days, you wonder where it is," he said. In his 22 years of passing about 295 kidney stones every year, he has never met another person who has faced a similar infliction.

As if that weren't enough, he was diagnosed with an extremely rare degenerative muscle disease, which is slowly turning his muscle into fat in his neck, back and legs.
He has been able to get around using a specialized walker or an electric wheelchair since being diagnosed with the disease in 2004.
