Largest fruit salad: UMass breaks Guinness World Record (VIDEO)
AMHERST, MA, USA -- Students and staff the University of Massachusetts-Amherst created a 15,291 pounds (6,935.88 kg) fruit salad (mixed in a swimming pool) with apples, melons, peaches, bananas, oranges, berries, and fruits like quince, passion fruit, and rambutan; about 500 volunteers and staff, cut, pitted and diced 15,291 pounds of fruit, shattering the Guinness World Records' record of 11,192-pound fruit salad set by McGill University in Montreal last year and
setting the new world record for the Largest fruit salad,
according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

The Guinness World Records' record for the Largest Caesar salad was prepared by Canirac, the Tijuana Restauranteurs Chamber of Commerce, weighed 3.287 tonnes (7,246 lb) and was unveiled in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest salad; it weighed 13,417 kg (29,579 lb), measured 25 m (82 ft) in length, 3 m 40 cm (11 ft 2 in) in width and 26 cm (10.2 in) in depth and was achieved by K.E.D.I The Public Benefit Municipal Enterprise of Ierapetra. It was measured in Ierapetra, Crete, Greece.
The World's Largest Fruit Salad was created with 20 varieties of apples, five kinds of banana, 14 varieties of berries, three of currants, four of cherries, three kinds of mint, three of grapefruit, 10 kinds of grapes, three kinds of mangoes, 19 different melon varieties, 10 kinds of oranges, three kinds of papayas, 13 of peaches, 12 of pears, two pineapples, nine different plums, three kinds of kiwi,15 other fruits and 500 pounds of orange juice.
Chef Jet Tila, who owns The Charleston and Kuma Snow Cream, joined the University of Massachusetts for the fifth consecutive year to create the World's Largest Fresh Fruit Salad, weighing 15,291 pounds.
It took over 500 students, staff, and volunteers at the Amherst campus to create the massive fruit salad, which was presented at the school's Welcome Back Barbeque.
It took the group approximately four hours of slicing, dicing, pitting, and peeling of 150 varieties of fruit to fill a 15-foot diameter swimming pool.
