Oldest
person to abseil - world record set by Doris
Long
PORTSMOUTH, UK -- Doris Long,
96, has abseiled 200ft down a 21-storey building with Radio
2 DJ Chris Evans in aid of The Rowans Hospice charity - setting
the new world record for the Oldest
person to abseil.

It was her 16th abseil and she pledged to
carry on the sport until she is 100.
Evans said: "She looked after me all the way
down, because half way down I got the 'colly-wobbles'."
The
previous Guinness world record for the Oldest
person to abseil was also set by Doris
Long in 2009 when she was 95.
Another 150 people also took part to
raise money for the hospice.
Ms Long said: "It was fine. Very exhilarating
because it was so very, very windy.
Doris challenged Radio Two breakfast DJ
Chris Evans and his breakfast show team to abseil with her
for The Rowans Hospice, live on air when she was invited onto
his show earlier this year.
Chris, who broadcasts to almost 10 million
people each week, said: 'It was just one of those moments
when you've got to say yes.'
"It kept coming in gusts and blowing us to one
side - once, we bumped in together, Chris and I.
"The gusts blew me several times across people's
windows. Good job nobody was in there having a bath."
The World's
Oldest person to abseil was watched by Portsmouth's
deputy Lord Mayor Cheryl Buggy, who was an independent witness.
She said: 'Doris just has this amazing sense of calm about
her. She just came down and is smiling benignly and calmly.
We can learn so much from people like her.
The great-grandmother has completed
16 abseils, starting at the tender age of 85.
And she has no plans to stop any time soon.
'Oh I will do more. I'll stop when I'm
100!'
