The Guinness World Records' record for the tallest sunflower measures 9.17 m (30 ft 1 in) and was grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer (Germany) in Karst, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany, as verified on 28 August 2014.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as sunflowers; it consists of 724 people and was achieved by Russell Lothrop and Northside Primary School (both Botswana) in Gaborone, Botswana, on 14 February 2014.
Hans-Peter Schiffer of Karst first held the record for tallest sunflower plant in 2009 with a 26-foot, 4-inch sunflower and he broke his own record in 2012 with a 27-foot plant.
Schiffer again broke his Guinness World Records' record in 2013 with a plant measuring 28 feet and 8 inches tall.
Growing giant flowers doesn't come easy, according to the gardener. Thunderstorm and hailstones damaged the award-winning sunflowers. "It was a very sad day for me because the hail destroyed nearly all the leaves. But nevertheless, my sunflowers continued growing."
The tall sunflower survived to the extent that Schiffer had to bring in his town's local fire department, equipped with scaffolding, to help measure it's record-breaking height.
As seen in the video above, the plant is supported by a large multi-level scaffolding platform.
