Largest green pepper: Gigantic Israeli Pepper breaks Guinness world record

Ein Yahav, Israel -- The pound-plus green pepper, raised by the agricultural village's produce company Yofi Shel Yerakot (Beauty of Vegetables) on brackish water with natural pesticides, grew to weigh half a kilo (more than a pound) thanks to optimum growing conditions in Israel's Arava Desert; named "Godzilla" by local children, it sets
the new world record for the Largest green pepper, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest chilli-pepper string; it measured 1,395 m (4,576 ft 9 in) and was made by citizens of Suncheon City, South Korea.

The Guinness world record for the heaviest pepper weighs 0.29 kg (0.63 lb), grown by Edward Curry (USA) at Curry Farms in Pearce, Arizona, United States.

The workers at Yofi Shel Yerakot, the produce farm for Moshav Ein Yahav, noticed the gigantic green pepper when it would not fit through the company's sorting machine.

Farm CEO Daniel Lev credits the optimum growing conditions of the Arava desert for the huge vegetable. The moshav's farm also uses a number of green growing techniques, which according to Lev, benefit both the vegetables and the consumers.

Each year, Yofi Shel Yerakot grows 34,000 tons of vegetables in protected greenhouses, nethouses, and tunnels using only non-chemical pesticides. The farm also allows each plot of earth to lie fallow one month a year to allow the ground to rejuvenate and prevent plant disease from overtaking the soil.

All the vegetables grown on the farm are watered with recycled, brackish water, which according to Lev is saltier than fresh water. Lev believes this saltier water contribute to the taste and flavor of Yofi Shel Yerakot's produce.
