ELY, MN, USA -- Dan MacCoy of Ely has grown giant pumpkins for the last three years, but this year he decide to focus more on the tomato growing and surprisingly grew the biggest tomato in the world, breaking the Guinness World Records' record that was held for 28 years with his 8.41 pound beauty and

The Guinness World Records' record for the heaviest tomato weighed 3.51 kg (7 lb 12 oz) and was grown by G. Graham (USA) of Edmond, Oklahoma, USA in 1986.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most tomatoes grown on a single stem or "truss"; it is 1,355 and was achieved by Surjit Singh Kainth (UK) at his home in Coventry, West Midlands, UK.

The size of MacCoy's tomato is only part of the amazing feature. It is also very remarkable that this giant was grown this far north and in Ely, Minnesota with a shorter growing season than most places in the world, The Ely Echo reported.

MacCoy planted the seed around April 15 and transplanted into the garden around the first of May. He allowed the plant to grow until he saw a nice blossom.

The seed is a Big Zach variety that produces a large tomato. It produces a mega bloom which are several blooms stuck together that produce a bunch of fused tomatoes.
