The Guinness World Records' record for the hottest chilli is the Trinidad Scorpion "Butch T" which was grown by The Chilli Factory (Australia) and rated at 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) according to tests conducted by EML Consulting Services in Morisset, New South Wales, Australia.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest serving of chili con carne; it weighs 1,097.69 kg (2,420 lb) and was achieved by Chris' Dream Chili Team (USA) in Minto, North Dakota, USA .

Joy, with husband Michael, developed the Dorset Naga from a Bangladeshi chilli and it was revealed as the then hottest in the world in 2006.

The couple run a chilli breeding programme and an online vegetable seed company specialising in chillies.

Joy, 55, said: "It really is astonishing to think about how much heat is on this plant. "It is holding more heat than any other I can think of. The most chillies we have ever had on a plant is about 700.

"This year our Dorset Naga crop was measured to have an heat level 1.22 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU)."
