The previous Guinness World Records' record holder for the largest calzone is Mike Wilson, owner of the Loveshack restaurant in West Lafayette, who in 2003 made history by baking a nine foot long, 22 inch wide, 70 pound calzone — the largest ever recorded up to that point.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest collection of pizza-related items; it belongs to Brian Dwyer (USA) with 561 different items from all over the world, as of 31 July 2011, which he has been collecting since 2010.

Visitors to the Rulli's Italian Restaurant in Middlebury were treated to a world record-breaking show as employees and supporters of the business successfully baked the largest calzone ever created as part of a fundraiser for the Middlebury Boys and Girls Club, the Goshen News reported.

With cameras rolling to document the event and a growing crowd of supporters standing by, Rulli and his team worked their way into the record books with their goal to more than double the current calzone record.

"We're hoping to hit anywhere from 20 to 24 feet long, and it should settle out at between 140 and 160 pounds," Rulli said in describing the massive creation, which included nearly 100 pounds of pizza dough, five gallons of pizza sauce, 25 pounds of pepperoni and 30 pounds of cheese.

Rulli's charged $5 for a slice of the giant calzone. Proceeds go to the Middlebury Boys and Girls Club.
