Longest
stationary bike riding-world record set by George Hood
[July 15] BURR RIDGE--The new world record for the longest stationary
bike riding was set by George Hood after riding more than 111 hours.
Hood was allowed 5 minutes of break time for every
hour he cycled 12 miles. Hood’s goal was to reach more than 100
hours on the bike, so he had to put in extra time to allow for the
breaks. Hood shattered the previous record of 82 hours
by riding for more than 111 hours.
"I want to make sure it doesn't get broken
for a while," Hood said. "There are a lot of people already trying
to break the old record. It would be nice to see my name in the
book."
Hood competed in Hawaii in 1986 when he set the
world record for consecutive jump rope, logging 13 hours, 12 minutes
and 11 seconds, which was easy to remember.
The Guinness Book comes out once a year and includes
the most up-to-date records. When Hood broke the world jump-roping
endurance record in 1986, someone eclipsed it before Guinness went
to print. While he has a certificate to commemorate that record,
his name has never appeared in the book.
A Drug Enforcement Administration supervisor,
Hood began his latest pedaling odyssey at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Calling
it the Century Spin for Kiwanis Kids, he set a goal to raise $30,000
for Twin Lakes Camp, a Kiwanis Club-operated camp for special needs
children near Plymouth, Ind.
As of late Saturday, roughly $30,000 had
been raised for the camp, reaching Hood’s goal, said Matt Baron,
spokesman for Five Seasons Sports Club. Pete Rekitz, president of
Twin Lakes, came with some of the camp’s kids Saturday to cheer
Hood on.
The money will go to improve the camp’s facilities
and to enable more children to come, Rekitz said. “We
don’t turn any kids away because of finances,” Rekitz said. “I think
it’s tremendous. He’s out there putting himself out physically and
every other way.”
