Most people standing on one leg simultaneously: Darien students sets world record

DARIEN, CT, USA -- As part of a fundraiser for child abuse awareness, 360 Darien High School students and other people participated in a school event - setting the new world record for the most people standing on one leg simultaneously (for two minutes).

The previous Guinness world record for the most people standing on one leg simultaneously is 339 and was achieved by Captain Morgan and the fans at the Rose Garden, in Portland, Oregon, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most consecutive pirouettes, set by Alicia Clifton (USA), who completed 36 pirouettes at the "Applause Studio" in Oklahoma, USA.

The Darien event was part of a sophomore class fund-raiser to benefit a child abuse prevention group.

History teacher and adviser for the event, Lynn Brown, said the students were brainstorming on what they could do to generate funds for child abuse prevention. One of the class advisers, Patrick Durkin, happened to stumble across the idea while surfing the Internet.

"We were trying to think of ways to do a fundraiser that would be easy, and I happened to find this particular record," Durkin said. "We weren't serious about it at first, but then we thought it would work."

Once enough people were gathered to make an attempt to break the record, Brown laid out the ground rules for what would cause disqualification.
Anybody who changed feet, touched another person or lost his or her balance would be removed from the line after two failed attempts.
Standing on one leg for two minutes proved to be less challenging for the participants, as only two people were pulled and 360 successfully stood for the full two minutes.
