Most people in a mustache contest: The Newport Winter Carnival sets world record
NEWPORT, NH, USA -- Organizers of the "Great Mustache Contest" of the 95th Newport Winter Carnival say there were 462 entrants vying for artistic honors of "mustache-sculpting,"-
setting the new world record for the Most people in a mustache contest at one time.
Categories during the events included "Grand Stache," "Menudo" and "Selleck."
The previous Guinness world record was 251 participants.
"We did it," said Steve Smith, general manager of WCNL Radio, which coordinated the event with the Newport Recreation Department. "We surpassed the Guinness world record."
The Guinness world record for the longest moustache measures 4.29 m (14 ft) and belongs to Ram Singh Chauhan (India).
Guinness World Records also recognized the largest gathering of men with moustaches: 1,131 participants at an event organised by KARE-11 TV at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.
Hundreds of men stood in line on the Newport Town Common, some for as long as two hours, awaiting an official "Great Mustache Contest" number.
As dictated by Guinness World Records, each man was signed in before two official observers, then photographed, and then filmed before a panel of mustache judges.
The mustache competition was one of several events in the 95th Newport Winter Carnival, including skijoring, a "strongman competition" for men and women, ice skating on the common, and many other family events. Carnival activities today will include ski jumping and skating.
