The Guinness world record stood at just over 41 hours, set by a group from Vermont, USA, which was beaten by the team, who clocked up an incredible 62 hours of play - 11 hours more than their original target.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest game of dodgeball; it involved 6,084 participants and was achieved by the University of California, Irvine at a game organised by NLA Sports (both USA) in Irvine, California, USA.

It is estimated they played more than 2,000 games of dodgeball and comes just weeks after the Bulls became national university dodgeball champions, The 'Bedfordshire on Sunday' reported.

The team played for three hours and rested for two, playing in shifts with six players participating on both teams at all times, while the others caught up on some rest in makeshift beds in the gym, leaving the area only for a quick toilet break.

Team captain Johnathan Rudland, 22, said: "As a club we are all really happy but we're also relieved as there was a lot of pressure on our shoulders. I haven't really put what we've done into context yet, but I'll probably realise it in a couple of days, after some sleep."

The record bid was all in aid of Sports Traider, Bedford, with the team looking to raise £4,000 which encourages children to try new sports, and helps talented youngsters from all backgrounds excel.
