The Guinness World Records' record for the largest picnic blanket measured 1,760 m² (18,944.41 ft²); it was woven at the Melin Tregwynt Mill in Wales, UK, for Waitrose Ltd and was laid out for the first time in Durban, South Africa, in April 2008.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest picnic table; it is 120.33 m (394 ft 9 in) and was achieved by Elite, an Elbisco brand, (Greece) in Athens, Greece on 22 June 2014. There were approximately 480 people sat at the table and took part in the picnic

Guests for Tuesday's Diner en Blanc, French for Dinner in White, showed up at one of 24 designated spots where the secret venue was disclosed. Then came the spectacle: dining and dancing under the open sky at Pier 26 on the Hudson River in Manhattan's tony Tribeca neighborhood.

Participants brought what they wanted for a chic picnic, including food, tables, chairs and even silverware and candles. They also had to clean up after themselves.

Each participant pre-registered for the event, paying $30. Food and drinks also were available at cost.

The phenomenon started in Paris in 1988 and has expanded to 60 cities on five continents, but organizers say the one in New York is the biggest. More than 125,000 people signed up this year.
