The Guinness World Records' record for the most cups of tea made in one hour by a team of 12 is 1608 and was achieved by Burco Water Boilers (UK) at Hotelympia, London, UK, on 27 April 2014.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest tea bag; it weighs 250 kg (551 lb 2.56 oz) and was created by Ahmed Mohamed Saleh Baeshen & Co., owner of Rabea Tea, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 20 September 2014.

The mayor was on hand at the sometimes rainy affair, as well as firefighters, who filled up the cup with firehoses. Volunteers boiled water with sugar in barrels on the ground which was added to the massive cup, and they formed a brigade to plop in 10-pound blocks of ice to make it truly iced tea.

"This record breaking attempt is a great way to celebrate that the Town of Summerville is the birthplace of sweet tea," said Mayor Bill Collins.

The previous Guinness World Records world record was set by Chick-fil-A with 1,140 gallons in 2010.

The 10-foot tall jar (already named "Mason") was constructed of fiberglass by local Scout Boats. It hold 1,400 gallons of brew made from 116 pounds of tea leaves from The Charleston Tea Plantation, 2,100 pounds of local sugar from Dixie Crystals, 3,000 pounds of ice -- and a lot of local support.
