BOVINGTON, UK -- The Tank Museum, in partnership with Armortek, hosted an attempt to break the Guinness World Records world record for the largest number of 1/6th scale model tanks in the world; the gathering was the biggest ever seen, as 96 of these detailed replicas, ranging from First World War to Cold War tanks, were brought together at the Bovington museum,
according to the World Record Academy.

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest collection of privately-owned armoured vehicles numbered 229 as of 3 February 2007, and belong to Jacques Littlefield (USA), who displays them at his family home, Pony Tracks Ranch, in California, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest tank battle ever; it is generally acknowledged to be the Battle of Kursk during World War II. On 12 July 1943, in the Prokhorovka region near the Russian town of Kursk, a total of 1,500 German and Russian tanks amassed for close-range fighting. By the end of the day both sides had lost over 300 tanks each.

Gill Watkins who, with her husband Mark, owns Armortek, the world's leading manufacturer of 1/6th scale armour kits, said, "All of the tanks brought together was a real sight to see - we're so pleased to have broken this World Record. It's always incredible to witness the great enthusiasm and level of detail that goes in to making these vehicles the best they can be."

These entirely British made models run on tracks, include authentic sounds and move just like a real tank. Each model tank is approximately 1 metre long and weighs in at around 340lbs (170kgs), they are capable of pulling a 7.5 ton truck, or climbing a muddy 45 degree slope.

The attempt took place as part of the Museum's Annual Model Exhibition TankMOD, when numerous model exhibitors descend on the Museum to show off their creations and share their hints and tips for creating for the perfect models, The Blackmore Vale Magazine reported.
