Farthest flight by hovercraft: Alexandru Duru breaks Guinness World Records record (VIDEO)

Lake Ouareau, Canada -- Canadian inventor of Romanian origin Catalin Alexandru Duru has set a World Record for farthest flight by hoverboard; Catalin needed to travel a minimum of 164 feet airborne to break the Guinness World records record — and in the end, he smashed it easily, travelling 905 feet and two inches (275.9m) at a height of around 16 feet at Lake Ouareau in Quebec, Canada,
according to the World Record Academy.
Catalin Alexandru Duru flew over Lake Ouareau in Quebec, Canada, reaching 275.9m ((905ft 2in) before the batteries ran out. Catalin Alexandru Duru broke the world record - by more than five times -- for farthest journey by hoverboard.

The Guinness World Records' record for the longest flight ever completed by a full-scale unmanned conventional aircraft is 13,840 km (8,600 miles), by a USAF Northrop Grumman Global Hawk Southern Cross II, which took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California on 22 April and landed at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia, 23 hr 23 min later on 23 April 2001.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the earliest flight around the world; it was by two US Army Douglas DWC seaplanes in 57 "hops" between 6 April and 28 September 1924, beginning and ending at Seattle, Washington, USA. The Chicago was piloted by Lieutenant Lowell H. Smith and Lieutenant Leslie P. Arnold, and the New Orleans by Lieutenant Erik H. Nelson and Lieutenant John Harding (all USA). Their flying time for the 42,398-km (26,345-mile) trip was 371 hr 11 min.

"I wanted to showcase that a stable flight can be achieved on a hoverboard and a human could stand and control with their feet," he said, claiming the board can reach "scary heights."

The board took 12 months to design and build and can be used anywhere, although its short flight time means it is not currently a practical means of transport.

Catalin Alexandru Duru's propeller-based hoverboard managed to travel a total distance of 275.9 metres to achieve the new World Record title for Farthest flight by a hoverboard.
