The previous youngest heart surgery patient was Rudy Maxwell-Jones, who was 36 hours old when he underwent an operation at Birmingham Children's Hospital in July.

The Guinness world record for the Oldest heart surgery patient was set by Herbert Carrington (USA), received a Medtronic Hancock II tissue valve on 10 June 1993 aged 94 years 129 days.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Longest surviving open heart surgery patient, set by Sadie Purdy (UK), who had open heart surgery on 4 December 1941, aged 17. The six-hour operation of tying a valve, performed by Oswald Tubbs (UK) of St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, UK, was still in its experimental stage, yet she took the record on 7 January 2004, 62 years 34 days later.

The child is now out of intensive care at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital and parents Jo and James hope she will be back at home by April.

Dr Asif Hasan re-plumbed the heart and trained the right side to do the work of the left in an 11-hour operation. But Jasmine suffered a cardiac arrest the following day, and had to spend almost three months in intensive care.

She had another operation to widen an artery and her parents hope to take her home to Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham, in the next few months.
