The Guinness World Records' record for the most people dressed as superheroes was achieved by 1,580 participants in an event organised by Paramount Studios to promote the Dreamworks movie 'Megamind' starring Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as videogame characters; it is 491 and was achieved by Tampereen Särkänniemi Ltd. (Finland) in Tampere, Finland.

Every participant received a deerstalker hat, pipe and magnifying glass on the day for an entry fee of £15. The minimum number of people required to set a new world records title was 250, which the event nearly doubled, the Mirror Online reported.

All money raised on the day went to the Leeds Teaching Hospitals to help raise funds for a new Yorkshire Brain Research Centre.

The event saw world-wide support with donations from Chile, France, USA, Canada, Japan and Mexico. Sherlocks have been popping up from around the world on social media, with fans posting 'Sherlock selfies' to help raise awareness of brain research and the world record attempt.
