The Guinness world record for the largest swing dance was achieved by 756 participants in an event organised by Steve Zaagman (USA) and the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society, at Rosa Parks Circle, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Largest Mambo Dance, set by 3,868 people who danced to Pérez Prado's Mambo No. 5 for five minutes on 19 October 2000 at Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona, Spain.
According to The Michigan Radio, "It's not unusual to see a thousand people hanging around and swing dancing at Rosa Parks Circle on any given Tuesday night in the summer. The Grand Rapids Original Swing Society (GROSS) has built a reputation as a fun, safe place for people to dance the night away."
Steve Zaagman, the founder of the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society (GROSS), was quoted by Michigan Live as saying "The current Guinness world record is 291 people and we have had around 1,000 dancers weekly so I'm pretty confident Grand Rapids can break the Guinness world record tonight."
The swing dancing at Rosa Parks Circle is sponsored by Mercantile Bank and Celebration Cinema and is free to the public. Winter weather moves the dancing indoors to numerous locations around the city.
