  Largest mortar board toss: world record set in Canterbury
   
   CANTERBURY, UK -- After the University of Kent's final graduation ceremony a total of 422 students and academic staff have celebrated their success by throwing their mortar boards in the air at Canterbury Cathedral, thus setting the new world record for the Largest mortar board toss, according to the World Record Academy.

 The Guinness World Records world record for the highest basket toss involved four bases tossing a flyer to a height of 5.50 m (18 ft) and was achieved by members of the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (Australia) on the set of a CCTV Guinness World Records special, in Beijing, China, on 3 September 2013.

     Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the highest pizza base toss; it was set using 567 g (20 oz) of dough is 6.52 m (21 ft 5 in) by Joe Carlucci (USA) at Mall of America, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA on 20 April 2006 during the filming of Guinness World Records week for the Food Network channel.

    It also marked Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow's final graduation ceremony in Canterbury as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Kent.

   It took place at Canterbury Cathedral on Friday after the University of Kent's final graduation ceremony of the week and was part of the celebrations to mark the retirement of vice-chancellor and president, Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow.

   Each mortar board had to be thrown at least two feet in the air to be classed as part of the record attempt and break the previous best of 290, set in 2012.
