Largest Macarena dance: Ancaster High School students set world record

ANCASTER, ON, Canada--1,861 participants – from the Ancaster High School, neighbouring schools and the community – gathered in a back field to dance the Macarena together for more than five minutes - setting the new world record for the Largest Macarena dance.

The gathering came together as AHS Principal Judy Langsner worked with Karin Swift of the Canadian Diabetes Association to make AHS one of the sites of a blue circle – the global symbol of diabetes.

Weather was perfect on the sunny afternoon as Guinness World Records adjudicator kept track of how long they danced, how many attended and how avidly they danced. It took about 100 students acting as marshals to make it happen.

"This truly was a student-driven and student-organized event," AHS Vice-Principal Simon Goodacre said.

"It was their idea and they did nearly all of the work for the day." And yes, they did indeed do the Macarena, the wacky dance inspired by the 1995 cult hit song of the same name.

The Guinness world record for the largest mambo dance was set by 3,868 people who danced to Pérez Prado's Mambo No. 5 for five minutes at Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona, Spain.
