Scherer sets world record
Clarksville, TN, USA -- David Scherer,
19, an assistant coach for parent-run team The
Swimming Eagles, played the video game "Grand
Theft Auto IV" for 55 hours to raise money for the
nonprofit swimming team he coaches-setting the world record
for the Longest
time spent playing a video game.

"Swimming is the best type of exercise
you can get," Scherer after playing 48 hours. "It is because
of swimming that I'm able to do what I'm doing right now."
Scherer said Retro's
Classic Arcade, which stayed open 24-hours-a-day during
his attempt, donated a portion of its profits from during
the record attempt to The Swimming Eagles to go toward
finding a home for the team.
Scherer said his team has to hold practice
sessions at several area pools. The
Swimming Eagles is a nonprofit, parent-run team.
David is no Play Station junkie,
on the contrary he is an honor student, volunteer, and currently
the assistant head coach of the Swimming Eagles swim team.
“I did not like the game choice and I don’t even encourage
marathon gaming, but this isn’t about the game it’s about
the kids.” Scherer stated.
An article in the Leaf-Chronicle said
Scherer has raised "several hundred" dollars in his quest
to secure about $20,000 for the team.
An avid swimmer since he was young,
Scherer knew the pleasure of having a home pool — knowing
where he would be training day to day. And through that training
he was able to be ranked 13th nationally at the age of 12
for the 100-yard butterfly. “When it comes to our practices,
we’re in limbo every day about where we’ll be,” Scherer says.
The previous Guinness world record for the
Longest
time spent playing a video game was 40-hour, 20-minute,
set by Chirantan Patnaik of India, The Clarksville (Tenn.)
