The Guinness World Records' record for the largest rice ball mosaic is 113.96 m² (1,226 ft² 100 in²) and was created by The World Largest Rice Ball Mosaic Art Project (Japan), in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, on 11 March 2013. 31,100 onigiri rice balls in six different colours were used to form the mosaic image.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest rice mosaic; it is 1,798 sq.m (19364.14 sq. ft) and was achieved by Chinese Taoism Folk Culture Association (Chinese Taipei) at Changhua City, Chinese Taipei on 8 November 2014.

The previous Guinness World Records world record was 428 omusubi set in Minabe, a town in Wakayama Prefecture.

In the attempt, pieces of salty kelp were used as fillings for omusubi, as Sakaide is known for production of salt. In Minabe, participants packed the omusubi with umeboshi pickled apricots, a local specialty, The Asahi Shimbun reports.
