The previous world record for the largest BLT sandwich in the world was set by the Associated Wholesale Grocers with a 209-foot, 16-inch-wide sandwich to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Guinness world record for the largest open sandwich was a barbecue pork bun weighing 606.45 kg (1,337 lb) which was prepared by Moore's BBQ (USA) in New Bern, North Carolina, USA.
Guinness World Records also recognized the longest picnic: it measures 1,979 m (6,492 ft 9 in) and was organised at the Ziegelwiese, Halle Saale, Germany.
Every summer, Iron Barley (5510 Virginia Avenue; 314-351-4500) keeps upping the ante for the world's largest BLT.
The new World's Longest BLT sandwich included:
600 pounds of bacon
440 pounds of bread
550 pounds of tomatoes
220 heads lettuce
110 pounds butter
60 gallons mayo
1/4 tank propane for toasting
...1,980 pounds in all, at 224 feet long and 18 inches wide.
Each segment of the sandwich consisted of 4 lbs of bread, 5 lbs bacon, 5 lbs, tomatoes, 2 heads of lettuce, and a 1/2 gallon of mayo.
Once the official measurements were taken, the sandwich was cut into individual portions and sold to benefit the Lift for Life Academy.
