Most pubs visited in 24 hours by a team: 'Thirsty 13' set world record

NEW YORK, USA -- A group of 13 drinkers visited 200 bars throughout New York's Manhattan - setting the new world record for the most pubs visited in 24 hours, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

The Guinness world record for the most pubs visited in 24 hours by a team is 102 achieved by a team of nine organized by John Egan (USA) in Ocean City, Maryland, USA, on 21-22 July 2010.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most pubs visited, set by Bruce Masters (UK), who has visited 44,213 pubs and various drinking establishments since 1960, sampling the local brew where available, as of 15 June 2011.

"It's a real blessing to have friends like this," said Thirsty 13–member Chris Solarz, an endurance athlete and hedge fund analyst with records in climbing, marathon running, and navigating the subway.

"Some people have real problems. I'm worried about getting to the next bar on time."

The "Thirsty 13" hit the 200 pub mark after 10 hours of bar-hopping that began at O'Hanlon's Pub on 14th Street, the New York Daily News reported.

During the first leg of the tour, the group tipped their glasses at bars and restaurants such as Mudspot, International Bar, Cafe Pick Me Up, Kate's Joint, Dorian Gray and Horseshoe Bar among others, drinking mainly lighter beers such as Coors and Bud Light and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

But they ventured into more adventurous territory as well, drinking Hell or High Watermelon, a wheat beer, at a pretzel shop.

Along the way, they snacked on energy bars and bags of pretzels. After hitting the Hop Devil Grill, on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place, they broke for lunch at Tompkins Square Park, where they noshed on sandwiches.

After visiting pizza joints, sake bars and European bistros, the group ended its record-breaking day at Solas on E. 9th Street where group leaders Chris Solarz and Bea Reigh celebrated their wedding anniversary.

The two met three years ago at Solas during a speed dating event.

In order to break the previous Guinness world record of 170 bars within a day, the New York group had one member drink a half pint at each bar they visited.

The visits were documented on camera and each drink was signed off by a bartender.
