Outdoor Bookcase - world record set by Ikea
BONY BEACH, Sydney, Australia --In honor of 30th
anniversary of their BILLY bookcase Ikea constructed an outdoor
library, consisting of 30 red
Billy
Bookcases on Sydney's popular Bondi Beach , setting the world record for the Longest
Outdoor Bookcase.

The Swedish retailer filled the cases
with beach reads for surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers to
swap with one of their own or make a gold coin donation to
buy, with proceeds going to the Australian Literacy & Numeracy
Foundation.
The bookcases were fastened to thick sheets
of wood to keep them steady in the sand.
The Billy
Bookcase is a classic, streamlined design that's been
used to store everything from pantry items to novels in homes
all over the world, but it's rare to see it used in a public
space.
The BILLY is the best selling bookcase in
history with over 40 million sold and 3 million a year still
being produced.
The one day event allowed beach goers
to swap books or to buy them with the proceeds going to The
Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation
Every one in attendance also received
a voucher for $30 off a limited edition BILLY 'Jader' bookcase.
The BILLY 'Jader' bookcase is covered with graffiti supposedly
originating from the work of Shakespeare.
