Largest Bee House - world record set by Kent Wildlife Trust

Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve, Kent, UK  -- Staff from Kent Wildlife Trust and volunteers took four hours to assemble a giant bee house which measuring 127.25 sq ft  (5m long and 2.37m high) , setting the world record
for the Largest Bee House.

The frame for the World's Largest Bee House was constructed by chartered builder Edward Morgan and it was filled with stone, bricks, pre-drilled concrete, wooden blocks and plant material.

All these materials have been donated by local businesses or sourced from the trust’s own nature reserves. Inmates at Maidstone Prison have built many of the internal component parts of the structure in their workshops.

Amanda Hamley, community fundraising and events manager for Kent Wildlife Trust, which runs the site, said: “We are really, really happy with it.

“I think it looks even better than I thought it would and it will provide a fantastic spectacle for visitors.”

She said 13 volunteers led by the Mayor of Sevenoaks, Cllr Simon Raikes, took part on the day, under the watchful eye of seven officials from Guinness World Records.

The Largest Bee House in The World will be a permanent feature of the reserve, which is accessed off Bradbourne Vale Road.

It is hoped that the buzz created by the World's Largest Bee House will encourage people to set up their own bee hives in their gardens.

Solitary bees are expected to take up residence next spring. The charity, which runs 60 nature reserves across the county, said the majority of bees prefer to live alone, which is why they are called solitary bees. They come in all species and pollinate flowers, but are becoming scarce.
